3. Troubleshooting Problems After a DOF Reality Platform Upgrade

After upgrading your DOF Reality platform, you may encounter problems with assembly, connector compatibility, motor operation, or platform configuration.

These problems can occur when components do not match the original platform revision, a connection is incomplete, or the software configuration has not been updated for the new hardware.

This guide explains how to identify the problem safely.

Common Symptoms

  • Upgrade components do not fit.
  • Motor or power connectors do not match.
  • The platform does not initialize after the upgrade.
  • One or more motors display an error.
  • The platform moves incorrectly.
  • The platform is detected as the wrong configuration.
  • Motion works differently after installation.
  • The upgrade appears mechanically complete, but the platform does not operate.

Step 1: Identify Your Original and Upgraded Platform

Before troubleshooting, identify:

  • Your original DOF Reality model.
  • The upgrade kit purchased.
  • Your platform’s serial number or hardware revision, if available.
  • Which components were replaced.
  • Whether the controller, motors, power supplies, or wiring were changed.

This information is important because upgrade components can differ between platform models and hardware revisions.

Step 2: Verify the Upgrade Kit

Compare the received parts with the packing list and upgrade instructions.

Check for:

  • Missing components.
  • Incorrect brackets or mounting hardware.
  • Different connector types.
  • Components that do not match the illustrated installation.
  • Parts that appear intended for another platform revision.

If a component does not fit as described, stop installation and contact support.

Do not drill, cut, modify, or force components to fit unless explicitly instructed by DOF Reality.

Step 3: Inspect Mechanical Assembly

With the platform powered off and safely supported:

  1. Review the upgrade assembly instructions.
  2. Confirm that brackets and structural components are installed in the correct positions.
  3. Check that no cables are trapped between moving components.
  4. Verify that visible mounting hardware has been installed according to the instructions.
  5. Look for obvious interference or obstruction.

Do not loosen load-bearing components while the platform is supporting a person or equipment.

If the platform appears uneven or mechanically obstructed, do not attempt a movement test.

Step 4: Inspect Connectors and Wiring

With power disconnected:

  1. Compare each external connector with the upgrade instructions.
  2. Confirm that connectors are inserted in their intended locations.
  3. Check for visibly damaged pins or connectors.
  4. Inspect cables for pinching or stretching.
  5. Verify that the new power supply and motor connectors match the intended upgrade components.

Important: Never force connectors together, modify connector pins, or use improvised adapters.

If the connectors do not match, stop and send photographs to DOF Reality Support.

Step 5: Verify the Platform Configuration

After confirming that installation is complete and safe:

  1. Open SRS.
  2. Check the platform configuration.
  3. Confirm that the selected model corresponds to the upgraded hardware.
  4. Review any configuration instructions supplied with the upgrade.
  5. Verify that the controller and software versions meet the upgrade requirements.

Do not install firmware or change controller parameters based on instructions for another model.

Step 6: Check for Motor Errors

If a motor displays ERR or fails to respond:

  1. Stop the platform.
  2. Note the motor number or channel.
  3. Record the exact error message.
  4. Check whether the error appeared immediately after the upgrade.
  5. With power off, visually inspect the associated external connections.
  6. Confirm that the correct components were installed according to the upgrade instructions.

Do not swap motor channels, bypass brakes, or modify wiring unless DOF Reality Support provides a procedure specific to your hardware.

Step 7: Test the Platform

Only proceed if the installation is complete, all connectors match, there are no hardware warnings, and the platform is mechanically secure.

  1. Clear the area around the platform.
  2. Ensure the emergency stop is accessible, if equipped.
  3. Follow the initial movement-test instructions provided for the upgraded model.
  4. Observe whether the platform initializes and moves as expected.
  5. Stop immediately if movement is uneven, uncontrolled, or accompanied by unusual sounds.

Do not continue testing if the platform behaves unexpectedly.

When to Contact Support

Contact DOF Reality Support if:

  • Parts do not fit.
  • Connectors do not match.
  • The upgraded platform does not initialize.
  • Motor errors appear.
  • The controller does not recognize the new configuration.
  • The platform moves unexpectedly.
  • You are uncertain whether the upgrade was installed correctly.

Include:

  • Original platform model
  • Upgrade kit purchased
  • Serial number or hardware revision
  • Photos of the installed components
  • Photos of incompatible connectors or mounting points
  • Exact error messages
  • A description of what worked before the upgrade and what changed afterward
